Berlin’s legendary brewer.Thorsten Schoppe is a legend in the craft beer world. He’s a pioneer, a bit of a dinosaur and also a really nice guy. Success, however, is not just a short term business goal it’s being in it for the long haul. Yes even those who have been on the road for a long time, like Schoppe Bräu , have to keep going. Schoppe is someone who has achieved a lot and still has a lot more planned.
Thorsten Schoppe has always been there in Berlin. Schoppe Bräu, at that time at the pub the Südstern in Neukölln, existed when nobody knew what an Ipa and Pale ale were. He was there when this whole craft beer thing started. I had already brewed 150 different types of beer with fellow students while he was studying at the Versuchs‐ und Lehrbrauerei Berlin (VLB) when everything was still completely light and pils. He had already opted for entrepreneurship, starting a small brewery himself, when everyone else who was studying brewing immediately to the big breweries, where they were paid good money and 32 Promised days of vacation a year.
But Thorsten Schoppe didn’t feel like it. “Somehow I didn’t find it as gripping in industry,” he said at the time. “In the factory where I did my apprenticeship, you could have made sausage and nobody would have noticed it because everything is packed in tanks and only stainless steel lines flow back and forth. You sit at the computer all day, it does everything, and in the end you didn’t see, smell or touch anything.
