The term "Radler" doesn't pertain to a particular company, but instead to a popular type of beer blend that originated in Germany. A traditional Radler comprises 50% beer and 50% sparkling lemonade, providing a refreshing and lightly alcoholic beverage.
The inception of the Radler traces back to the 1920s, with its creation credited to Franz Xaver Kugler, a German innkeeper. Kugler had built a bicycle trail from Munich to his establishment in the small town of Deisenhofen. One sunny day, around 13,000 cyclists made their way to his inn.
Faced with the prospect of running out of beer due to the unexpected influx of patrons, Kugler had a moment of inspiration. He decided to extend his beer supply by mixing it with the large quantity of lemon soda he had on hand, which had been selling slowly. The resulting mixture was an immediate hit with the cyclists due to its thirst-quenching and lower-alcohol properties, making it the perfect beverage for their ride back to the city.
And so, the Radler style was born. Kugler's innovative solution is now enjoyed in many countries, with numerous breweries worldwide producing their versions of Radler, including the well-known Bitburger Brewery with their own Bitburger Radler.
