Q&A with Lewis Kennedy
“I'm Lewis, Founder of Talonmore Drinks Company where we strive to push the boundaries of flavour and create a high quality non-alcoholic dark spirit for those who enjoy whiskey, rum, etc. but we are looking to reduce their alcohol consumption. I come from a product design background where I worked with premium whiskey brands in Scotland and my passion for the drinks world grew from there.”
Discover TalonmoreWhat inspired you to create Talonmore, and how did your journey begin?
"My journey began at University where I was working for alcohol brands in the design of packaging bottles, labels, etc. and began to really understand the importance of branding and storytelling in the drinks industry. I was also working as an ambassador for a drinks brand and realised that if you didn't drink alcohol, there weren't many great alternatives for spirits and especially dark spirits. So during a pandemic I decided to set out to see if I could do something to change that and be apart of the solution."
How do you approach crafting flavour in your drinks, and what makes your product unique?
"When first developing Talonmore, I knew what I was looking for and worked with recipe developers to create a high quality liquid. After many liberations and various base distillates nothing was quite hitting the mark and they suggested we try brewing methods to create a spirit like product. That is how we got to where we are with a great flavour and texture to our flagship alcohol free spirit."
What are the biggest challenges you face in producing a high-quality low/no alcohol product?
"Initially it was making sure we had a product that was different, how to innovate in a space not much money was being poured into, not was there much research happening but it is very different now which is exciting for category. Production can be tricky, when you speak to different sites to try and get the quantity or tweak something there is always confusion when you say something along the lines of 'we brew our spirit'. Getting our ingredients can occasionally be tricky but we've been working with good suppliers for long enough now that we know when to order, when it will arrive, and how long it will take."
How do you envision the future of low and no? Are there any trends you're excited about?
"It only seems to be growing, even in our short time there has been an increase in competition in every alcohol free drinks category. I think the future will be about flavour, quality, and educating people on the benefits of reducing alcohol consumption and also the options out there to try with functional drinks becoming part of that more and more."
What is one thing you wish more people knew about your product or the low/no alcohol industry in general?
"That just because there is not alcohol in the drink does not automatically mean it will be cheaper. Most of us are smaller producers so don't get the economies of scale, plus creating drinks with alcohol would almost definitely be cheaper."
What makes your drink special?
"We are a very natural product with virtually nothing artificial and by using brewing methods to produce our spirit we are doing something very unique with the liquid we create."
